A New York City man who allegedly hurled racist comments at two Asian American women and doused them in liquid in a subway station has been indicted for hate crimes.
Derrick Johnson, 40, reportedly approached two women inside the Rockefeller Center subway station in Manhattan on May 8, where he doused them in an unknown liquid and pushed one to the ground and spat on her.
On Wednesday, he was charged with assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment and was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. He will remain at Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward in Manhattan on a $15,000 bail or a $30,000 bond, according to NYC inmate public records.
After pushing the woman, he allegedly yelled at her: ‘You f**king Chinese. I don’t know why you’re here in America,’ law enforcement sources said, according to the New York Post.
The woman, 26, experienced ‘significant bruising’ and had ‘substantial pain and swelling’ in her head and jaw, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, 48, said in a statement on Wednesday. It is unclear if the other woman suffered any physical injuries.
Johnson was arrested on May 27 after attacking two officers who were attending to a lewd man in Chelsea, a police source told the New York Post.

He reportedly got on top of one of the officers and violently hit her in the face repeatedly, sources told the Post.
Johnson is expected to appear in court again on August 16, according to NYC inmate public records.
Hate crimes – especially against Asian Americans – have skyrocketed in the City That Never Sleeps since the pandemic began. Some experts are blaming the spike on the coronavirus, which originated in China.
New Yorkers have experienced a 96 percent increase in bias crimes throughout 2021, as more and more New Yorkers are being attacked in the streets, pushed onto subway tracks, and harassed for their gender, race and religion. The trend is continuing in 2022.
Asian hate crimes skyrocketed 343 percent from 2020 to 2021, with 133 Asian Americans experiencing terrifying and dangerous experiences of discrimination.
Hispanic hate crimes were also up a staggering 700 percent last year, with a total of eight people being harassed or harmed in 2021, up from one in 2020.
A total of 538 hate crimes occurred throughout 2021, compared to 275 in 2020.
So far, in 2022, hate crimes have surged 13.6 percent to 343 hate crimes as of July 10, compared to the same time last year, according to the NYPD.
Transit crimes are also up 54 percent this year, with overall crime up 37 percent.
‘The subway is central to our city, and riders of all backgrounds deserve safety when they travel,’ Bragg said in a statement on Wednesday.
‘The rise of bias-driven crimes is unacceptable. We are expanding our office’s Hate Crimes Unit to enhance these prosecutions while increasing community engagement and other preventative measures.’

Bragg, alongside NYC Mayor Eric Adams, 61, has received considerable pushback for their lax bail laws, which has left many unwanted criminals back out on the streets of New York.
At a press conference for an unrelated incident yesterday, Adams said violent criminals do not represent New York City.
‘I don’t think this dangerous person is a reflection on New York. Sometimes we look at the worst among us and define it as our city. The average New Yorker gives the homeless a helping hand, they do not use their hands to assault them,’ Adams said at the press conference.
