It’s-a me, Mario!
Ridley Scott’s fashion drama, “House Of Gucci,” has been harpooned with “terrible” reviews — The Post called it “abysmal” — but it’s hardly the worst criticism lobbed on the much-hyped film.
Ruthless Twitter critics have lasered in on Jared Leto’s accent, taking potshots at the actors’ performance, which many analogized to the titular character in “Super Mario.”
“Jared Leto’s accent reminded of Mario/Luigi,” scoffed one critic about the 49-year-old Oscar winner, who portrayed bumbling Italian fashion mogul Paolo Gucci in the crime biopic, which also stars Lady Gaga, Al Pacino and Adam Driver.
Another critiqued, “Jared Leto’s “It’s-a me, Mario!” approach to the Italian accent, which does the job — he’s supposed to be a buffoon — but still rubs me the wrong way (as someone who grew up in Northern Italy).”
One offended party described Leto’s accidental cartoon plumber impression as “pure anti-Italianism,” a worry echoed in Chris Pratt’s recent casting as Mario in the upcoming “Super Mario Bros.” movie.
However, other Twitter linguists thought the “Suicide Squad” actor sounded more Eastern European than Italian.
“Look, I’ll just say it: Jared Leto’s Russian accent in House of Gucci was waaaaayyyyy off the mark,” flamed one detractor.
Some saw Leto’s goofy voice as the one upside to the “mess of a biopic,” which was indeed panned by many critics.
Of course, the “Requiem For A Dream” star’s voice wasn’t the only problematic accent in House Of Gucci. Viewers also lambasted Lady Gaga’s turn as Patrizia Reggiani, who infamously enlisted a hitman to whack her ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci, in 1995.
“Mother Monster comes off as Russian as Boris and Natasha, Mikhail Gorbachev and a cold bowl of borscht,” The Post’s film critic Johnny Oleksinski described in his recent film review.
Even the movie’s dialect coach Francesca De Martini ripped the 35-year-old singer’s performance, telling the Daily Beast, “I feel bad saying this, but her accent is not exactly an Italian accent, it sounds more Russian” — despite months of practice by Gaga.
“House Of Gucci” hits theaters on November 24.
