The White House confirmed Thursday that President Joe Biden will travel to California Monday to campaign for Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who’s facing voters in a recall election the next day.

Before participating in a Long Beach rally, which was first reported by the LA Times, Biden will observe wildfire damage in Sacramento.

En route to the west coast, Biden will stop in Boise, Idaho where he will visit the National Interagency Fire Center. He’ll participate in a ‘Build Back Better’ event in Denver, Colorado on the way back.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki was asked at Thursday’s briefing why it was important for Biden to go on the campaign trail amid a continued COVID crisis.

‘Because the election is Tuesday,’ Psaki curtly replied.

‘I would say that the president remains quite popular in California, as he does in Virginia and other states where there are competitive elections this year and certainly we don’t campaign in states where we are not wanted, but hopefully this will be helpful in the efforts of the governor,’ she added.

Biden will be on hand to make a final push for Newsom before the September 14 recall election wraps up.

The latest polls show Newsom is on track to survive the recall effort, which was hatched by Republicans over his coronavirus restrictions.

On the ballot, California voters are being asked should Newsom be recalled and who should replace him.

California’s Democratic Party is instructing voters to vote ‘no’ on the first question and leave the second question blank.

If more than 50 per cent of voters vote ‘yes’ on the first question, the top vote-getter then becomes governor.

FiveThirtyEight.com’s compilation of polls show 54.3 per cent of California voters support keeping Newsom, versus the 42 per cent who want to remove him.

Among the Republicans running to replace Newsom, surveys show conservative talk show host Larry Elder has the best shot.

However, Elder has made a number of controversial statements in recent days, including that slave owners could be entitled reparations.

‘Their legal property was taken away from them after the Civil War, so you could make an argument that the people that are owed reparations are not only just Black people but also the people whose “property” was taken away after the end of the Civil War,’ Elder said on Prager University’s The Candace Owens Show.

Democrats have tried to nationalize the election, with former 2020 presidential hopefuls, Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar, stumping for Newsom over the weekend, and Vice President Kamala Harris campaigning for him in the Bay Area Wednesday.

'They wouldn't be trying to recall him except that they know he is a national leader,' Vice President Kamala Harris said in San Leandro, California on Wednesday

‘They wouldn’t be trying to recall him except that they know he is a national leader,’ Harris said in San Leandro. ‘This is why they are putting so many resources and time into trying to take out Gavin Newsom. It is because of his vision. It is because of the agenda.’

‘Let us send the message to the world, that these are the things we stand for, these are the things we fight for and we will not give up,’ Harris continued. ‘Because we know that so much is at stake.’

Harris pointed to Republican-led efforts to restrict voting in Georgia and Texas and the new, controversial six-week abortion law in Texas.

‘They think if they can run in California they can do this anywhere,’ Harris said. ‘Well, we will show them you’re not going to get this done, not here.’

On Saturday, Warren urged voters not to replace Newsom with ‘California’s own Donald Trump.’

‘It comes down to you, California. Voting yes in this recall election means installing Larry Elder as governor,” Warren said, according to the LA Times. ‘Voting yes means installing one more Republican governor to undercut women, one more Republican governor to put our children at risk, one more Republican governor to grease the skids for the fossil fuel industry to destroy our planet.’

Klobuchar appeared with Newsom on Sunday.

And pro-Newsom ads have also featured Sen. Bernie Sanders, a favorite among the left flank of the Democratic Party.

Newsom got in trouble politically over the slew of restrictions he enacted to combat the coronavirus. At the same time, the governor got caught attending a birthday party at the tony French Laundry restaurant in the Napa Valley, when he was advising Californians to stay home.

A judge also granted an extension to recall supporters, allowing them more time to gather signatures, which is how Newsom is now on the ballot.

Vote-by-mail ballots started getting sent out on August 16.
