Prince Harry and Meghan Markle: A relationship timeline in photos

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been together for almost six years after meeting through a mutual friend in early July 2016. They kept their relationship under-wraps for months but the news eventually broke in November 2016 sparking a global frenzy at the prospect of Harry finally settling down.

However the Duke, 37, was forced to defend his new girlfriend when he finally confirmed they were dating, saying he was ‘worried about Meghan’s safety’ following the ‘wave of abuse and harassment’ she has faced. 

Prince Harry proposed to Meghan in 2017 saying ‘I knew she was the one from the very first day’ during a photo call in the Kensington Palace gardens.

The pair got married on the 19 May 2018 in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, and they soon started a family, welcoming their son Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor, three, the following year and their daughter Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, 14 months, on 4 June 2021. 

In January 2020, the Duke and Duchess announced they intended to step back from their roles as working royals. 

After taking a six week break from royal duties in Canada, the pair stepped down as senior members of the royal family in March 2020.

In February 2021, a palace statement announced that Harry and Meghan would not be able to hold royal patronages.

Weeks later, the royal couple gave an explosive Oprah interview in which they explained their reasonis for stepping back as senior members of the royal family, with allegations of racism levelled at an unnamed royal and Meghan saying she’d been left suicidal. 

Now they are mainly based at their home in Montecito, California, but have returned to the UK for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and are expected in Windsor next months when they carry out charity engagemenbts in the UK.

Archie Mountbatten Windsor was christened exactly two months after he was born on July 6. The young royal was pictured sitting on the lap of his mother, the Duchess of Sussex, as she nestled into the shoulder of his father, the Duke of Sussex. The ceremony was performed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, using the silver gilt Lily Font. Commissioned in 1840 by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert for the birth of their first child, it is part of the Crown Jewels and had been brought from the Tower of London for the occasion.
