Each week, publications from the Southern California News Groups 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Maalik Murphy, Serra: Murphy, a Texas commit, completed 19 of 28 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s 29-14 win over Notre Dame. Through four games, Murphy has completed 64 of 112 passes for 888 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions.

Xavier Washington, Rancho Cucamonga: Washington was extremely efficient in Rancho Cucamonga’s season opener. He completed 29 of 33 passes for 384 yards and four touchdowns in a 27-19 victory over Apple Valley. Washington helped the Cougars overcome an early 13-0 deficit. He tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Julian Lundy and also connected with Jonah Dawson and Isaiah Lopez for touchdowns. Rancho Cucamonga hosts Norco on Friday.

Josh Hunter, Mater Dei: Hunter had a team-leading eight tackles and an interception in the Monarchs’ 45-3 win over Duncanville in a game that featured two nationally-ranked teams. Hunter (5-10, 168), a safety who is committed to San Diego State, had four solo tackles and assisted on four others. He also returned a punt 18 yards. Hunter was the Trinity League defensive MVP last season.

Nick Adimora, Mayfair: Adimora had a big night in the Monsoons’ 37-20 win over St. Anthony. The running back had 20 carries for 226 yards and three touchdowns and also had a 31-yard receiving score. In Week 0, he had 181 rushing yards and three touchdowns (also a 65-yard receiving touchdown) in Mayfair’s 41-12 win over Chaffey.

Max Garrison, St. Francis: Garrison opened his senior year in style by rushing for 371 yards and six touchdowns. The Golden Knights needed every part of his big performance for a 44-35 victory over Mira Costa. Garrison sealed the game with a 52-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. He rushed for 196 of his yards in the second half. Garrison and St. Francis have another big game Friday at home against Damien.

Kayden Collins, Canoga Park: Collins put forth an impressive effort Friday night in Canoga Park’s 54-28 loss to Garfield. He rushed for 261 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns. He was also a standout defensively, recording nine tackles and returning a 74-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.
